  • Tooling amortisation. Where a part needs dedicated tooling, a casting die, a forging die, a mould, that tooling is paid for up front and has to be recovered across the parts it produces. The more expensive the tooling, the higher the volume needed to justify it, and the higher the MOQ.
  • Material minimums. Raw material is often sold in minimum quantities, and specialty alloys may carry mill minimums far larger than a small order needs. A supplier will not buy a tonne of a special grade to make a handful of parts.
  • Transaction cost. Quoting, quality control, documentation, and export paperwork cost roughly the same regardless of order size. A very small order can cost as much to administer as a large one, which makes it uneconomic without a minimum.

CNC machining. The most flexible. A CNC machine is programmed rather than tooled, so changing from one part to another is mostly a matter of a new program and some fixturing. That means CNC shops can make small runs, even single prototype pieces, though the per-unit cost on a small run is high because the setup is spread over few parts. Economical production runs often start in the tens to a few hundred, but if you need ten machined parts, a CNC shop can usually make them, for a price. Many machining suppliers express their minimum as an order value rather than a quantity, which we will come to.

Sheet metal fabrication. Fairly flexible. Laser cutting, punching, and bending set up quickly, so small batches are feasible, but as with machining, larger runs bring the per-unit cost down. Expect low to moderate minimums, often in the tens to low hundreds depending on complexity.

Investment casting. Higher minimums. Investment casting needs wax tooling, and that tooling has to be amortised, which pushes MOQ into the hundreds or thousands for many parts. Sample quantities are sometimes possible using rapid-prototyped wax patterns instead of hard tooling, at a higher unit cost, which is a useful route for qualification before committing to a die.

Sand casting. Moderate. A pattern is required, but it is cheaper than the dies used in investment or die casting, so minimums tend to be lower, often in the tens to hundreds.

Die casting. High. Die casting uses expensive hardened-steel dies, which only make economic sense at high volume, so MOQs typically run into the thousands. This is a high-volume process by nature.

Forging. Depends on the type. Closed-die (drop) forging uses costly dies and favors volume, often hundreds to thousands. Open-die forging uses general tooling and is far more flexible, suiting lower volumes and larger one-off parts.
